Creative Practice No. 3: "Small Wonders"

Stop reproducing. Start composing in the moment.

Do you feel there are melodies inside you but don't know how to let them out?
Do you want to play something that feels intimate, and is entirely yours?

This self-paced course is about the transition from following notes to following your own intuition.

Small Wonders offers a more intimate atmosphere, where you can explore how small musical ideas can be developed, transformed and answered.

Three courses, three musical worlds

The Creative Practice courses are not a sequence — you don't need to take them in order.

Each course uses a different piece as a creative playground, offering a different musical character and its own creative challenges. The same six-step approach gives you a familiar path into improvisation, while the music invites you to explore something new each time.

Choose the piece that speaks to you, and begin there.

What you’ll learn:

In this course, we’ll use my original composition Small Wonders as our creative playground. The piece unfolds from a quiet, melancholic lullaby into a more lively, hopeful middle section—offering a beautiful framework for exploration. I’ll guide you in using this structure to create something of your own. We’ll take it step by step, at a gentle and approachable pace.

You’ll learn a simple, intuitive “recipe” of 6 steps that unlocks your creative voice.

The 6 Steps to Musical Flow

Each lesson follows a clear and repeatable process:
Arrive — settle into the sound
Explore — discover simple note choices
Shape — create a small musical idea
Expand — develop your idea further
Awaken — bring movement and variation
Flow — play freely and intuitively

Through improvising you will discover:

The Power of Limitation

Why starting with just three notes can open the door to true musical freedom.

Motif Building

How to create a small “musical seed” that brings structure, coherence, and meaning to your playing.

Expand and Answer

How to create a natural musical conversation by repositioning small patterns.

The Flow State

A gentle, guided approach to quieting the mind and truly listening to the sounds you create.

Each of the six steps includes two videos and a PDF, so you can see and hear an idea before exploring it at the piano.
Take your time with each step, and return to it whenever you wish.
A backing track and optional left-hand variations let you practise the material with different accompaniment patterns.

This is not a “copy my fingers” tutorial.
It’s an invitation to explore your own imagination.
By the end of this course, you won’t just have have practiced a new piece...

you’ll have the tools to turn your own small ideas into musical wonders.

Who this is for

This course is designed for players with at least two years of piano experience who feel comfortable with basic hand coordination and reading notation.

If you are earlier in your journey or still find hand coordination challenging, you are welcome to choose the course option with 1:1 sessions. We can go through the steps together and adjust the exercises to your current technique.
